From the late 1960’s to the early 1990’s, the Internet was a communication and research tool used almost exclusively for academic and military purposes. This changed radically with the introduction of the World Wide Web (WWW) or web in short in 1998. The WWW is a set of programs, standards and protocols governing the way in which multimedia files are created and displayed on the Internet.
The World Wide Web (WWW) is a set of program, standards and protocols that allows the multimedia and hypertext files to be created, displayed and linked on the Internet.
There are various attributes that have contributed to the success of WWW.
- User-friendly :- WWW resources con work easily with most with Internet browsers, which are very useer-friendly.
- Multimedia Documents. Information on the Web, which may be graphics, audio, video, animations and text is viewed in pages. A web page is a document on the Internet that can contain text plus any of these multimedia elements. WWW allows and supports the Internet users to create, link and display these multimedia web pages.
- Hypertext and Hyperlinks. A hypertext file is a document that can incorporate text, graphic images, audio and video tracks, and most importantly, dynamic links to related files or documents, even on net. These dynamic links are called hyper links.
